River Theory has been conceived, fostered, and produced across the continent and beyond. The editors imagined this project on Walbunja Country on the South Coast, and created the magazine on the stolen lands of the Gadigal and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Peoples, respectively. This publication also includes works from contributors from Bidjigal Country, Turtle Island and Aotearoa. We recognise all of the Peoples, knowledges and cultures that emerge from each of those places, and pay our respects to their Elders. The editors imagined River Theory whilst swimming in a river that has been cared for by First Nations people for tens of thousands of years, as are the places we edit, design and write from. We acknowledge First Nations peoples’ ongoing resistance to colonial violence in so-called Australia. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.
